In the weeks following my diagnosis, I devoted a lot of time to figuring out which personal care products are gluten free. After calling several mainstream cosmetic companies and coming up with very limited options, I consulted the Internet, and found a few helpful tips about possible gluten-free cosmetics from other women with celiac disease. Using these suggestions as a starting point, I contacted each company to confirm the gluten-free status of each recommended product and have expanded my search from there. As a result, I have generated a fairly extensive gluten-free cosmetic list, and I hope that you will find it a useful reference. I’m always finding new gluten-free products to add to my list, so check back periodically for additional suggestions.
You’ll notice that I have included contact information for each company as well as the date that I last confirmed that the product was gluten free. I strongly encourage you to contact each company yourself to confirm that the product is actually gluten free because product ingredients change periodically, and I have no way of testing the gluten content in these products myself. In most cases, a quick email will suffice, and most companies respond in a timely manner.
Some mainstream companies are purposely absent from my list because they cannot confirm or deny the gluten status of their products (e.g., most of Clinique’s products fall in this category), report that none of their products are gluten free (e.g., Tarte Cosmetics), never respond to my phone calls or emails (e.g., Bobbi Brown), or will only comment on the wheat content but not barley, rye, or oats (e.g., Neutrogena). If you have had better luck with any of these companies, please let me know. It’s always possible that I caught a customer service person on a bad day.
If any gluten-free products that you love are not represented on my list, please share your tips! In addition, please post a comment if you’ve used any of the products listed and agree or disagree with my endorsement. Finally, I have written posts dedicated to what I like about some of these products, including Lancôme, AVEDA, Burt’s Bees, and MAC, which you may also enjoy.
